Arthur the King (2024) – A Dangerous Adventure in the Wilderness

Adventure Team Racing is an incredibly intense endurance activity that goes far beyond traditional sports like the Iron Man. It involves running, biking, climbing, kayaking, and more over challenging terrain, often lasting for days with limited breaks. “Arthur the King” tells the story of an American team racing through the Dominican Republic’s wilderness, led by Michael Light (played by Mark Wahlberg) who forms a bond with a stray dog named Arthur.

The movie has three main parts, but they don’t always fit together smoothly. The first part focuses on Michael’s story, which is not as interesting as the others. He’s restless, maybe addicted to adrenaline, and feels pressure to prove himself after being called the best adventure team racer never to win a championship. He loves his family but doesn’t enjoy working for his dad. He’s determined not to be remembered for his team’s embarrassing loss.

No sponsors want to support Michael after his last failure, but he manages to gather half the money he needs and forms a team. Chick, the navigator, was kicked out of the championship team due to his bad knee. Olivia, an expert free climber, is the daughter of a former champion. Leo, a social media star who posted the embarrassing mud photo from their last race, still holds a grudge against Michael for past mistakes. Michael promises Leo a say in the team’s decisions, despite warnings that Leo’s input will be loud.

The second part of the movie follows the race itself, which lasts 5-10 grueling days over extremely tough terrain. Due to budget constraints, the team arrives just before the race starts, lacking crucial preparation time. They’re not even able to acclimate to the climate properly. Michael reminds the team that anything can happen in the race, and they respond with motivational phrases like “Whatever it takes” and “We accept it. We embrace it.”

The first part of the race is a 24-mile trek through the jungle with no defined path. Racers must find shortcuts through dangerous, uncharted terrain. Despite the stunning scenery, the focus is on the thrilling action, such as a tense scene on a deteriorating zip line.

The third part focuses on Arthur, a mistreated street dog who, after Michael gives him food, surprisingly follows the team for hundreds of miles. Arthur saves them from a dangerous situation, and throughout the race, he and Michael bond, evolving from loners into a close-knit team. The team’s determination to do “whatever it takes” remains, but their perspective shifts regarding what they’re willing to risk everything for.

Sometimes when Michael speaks to Arthur, it seems like Wahlberg is imitating Andy Samberg imitating him, almost expecting him to ask the dog to say hi to his mother. However, the bond between Michael and Arthur, and how Michael channels his race determination into bringing Arthur home, is truly touching. We anticipate seeing real shots of Michael and Arthur during the closing credits.

Michael’s wife calls his dream “a magical finish line,” and the movie reminds us that we should pay close attention to the goals we set for ourselves, to decide whether achieving them will really give us what we are hoping for and what it means to win.
