Lisa Frankenstein (2024) – a Promising Teen Movie with a Unique Blend of Horror, Romance, and Comedy

The last time we got a teen-centric movie that felt like an instant classic was around 2018, with films like “The Hate U Give,” “Eighth Grade,” “Blockers,” and possibly “Booksmart” from the year after. Since then, there hasn’t been a standout teen movie until potentially this year’s Sundance offerings.

“Lisa Frankenstein” is a promising teen movie with a unique blend of horror, romance, and comedy, written by Diablo Cody known for her insight into teenage and adult female experiences. It’s directed by Zelda Williams, with Kathryn Newton in the lead role. The story follows a goth girl who falls in love with a supernatural creature, offering a fresh take on the teen movie genre.

“Lisa Frankenstein” disappoints on all fronts. The script lacks boldness, and the direction fails to bring magic to the screen, resulting in a lackluster comedy, coming-of-age story, and love tale.

The story centers on Lisa Swallows, a misfit who witnesses her mother’s murder and struggles with her stepmother Janet. She daydreams in a cemetery and inadvertently brings a corpse back to life when she makes a wish.

“Lisa Frankenstein” lacks the specific charm of “Beetlejuice” or the soulfulness of “Edward Scissorhands.” While Cole Sprouse’s performance as the monster corpse is somewhat enjoyable, the film’s attempt to blend genres falls short. The quests and adventures of Lisa and the monster lack excitement, despite Kathryn Newton’s capable performance.

Despite its nods to Mary Shelley’s classic and the ’80s high school film era, “Lisa Frankenstein” fails to capture the spirit it aims for. The script and direction lack excitement and feel dated, despite attempts to infuse it with nostalgia and quirky charm. Overall, it’s a disappointing debut for director Zelda Williams.
