Leyla and Tristen are a troubled couple. Leyla is battling depression and has withdrawn from the world. Tristen agrees to go on a retreat with Leyla, suggested by her friend Stella, to a remote island where couples can swap bodies. The retreat has a Scandinavian minimalist style and spa-like atmosphere.

“Skin Deep” is a sci-fi drama by Alex Schaad, focusing on body swapping. Unlike other movies in the genre, it takes time to explore the social and romantic impacts of this concept. Body swapping usually offers protagonists new perspectives and growth opportunities. In “Skin Deep,” Leyla gets a chance to feel differently through swapping bodies, potentially revitalizing her relationship with Tristen, if he can accept her new form.

“Skin Deep,” co-written by Alex and Dimitrij Schaad, is reminiscent of “The Lobster” but with a more serious tone. It explores the unintended consequences of body swapping. Tristen and Leyla swap with Fabienne and Mo, a troubled couple, which upsets Tristen. Leyla, hurt by his reaction, swaps with another man. This challenges Tristen’s love for Leyla regardless of her form. Leyla reflects on the depth of connection in other couples, longing for the same with Tristen.

In Schaad’s film “Skin Deep,” Leyla’s journey to rediscover herself is compelling, but one aspect feels rushed. Roman, grieving the loss of his partner, offers to swap bodies with Leyla to help her find happiness. While Leyla’s new body brings her joy, she hesitates to leave the island, raising ethical concerns about swapping with someone unprepared and the lack of consent in keeping another’s body. However, this issue isn’t explored thoroughly, leaving it feeling hurried compared to the rest of the narrative.

Schaad’s portrayal of body swapping therapy resonates well with contemporary discussions on fluid identities and evolving relationships. The camera work, done by Ahmed El Nagar, along with production design by Bartholomäus Martin Kleppek, creates a futuristic yet rustic retreat atmosphere. The cast seamlessly transitions between personalities, aided by subtle changes in body language. Despite minimal special effects, the film effectively immerses the audience in Leyla’s emotional journey.
