Overview

“Alone in the Dark” (2005) is a horror-action film directed by Uwe Boll, loosely based on the video game series of the same name. The story follows Edward Carnby (Christian Slater), a paranormal investigator, as he delves into the mysterious disappearance of an ancient artifact called the Abkani, which holds immense power. Carnby discovers a sinister government conspiracy linked to experiments on orphaned children, who have now grown into powerful supernatural beings.

The film combines elements of horror, science fiction, and action, with Carnby facing off against both human adversaries and otherworldly creatures unleashed by the artifact. Alongside him is archaeologist Aline Cedrac (Tara Reid), who aids in uncovering the truth behind the Abkani and the shadowy organization seeking to exploit its power.

Despite an intriguing premise and some intense action sequences, the film received widespread criticism for its convoluted plot, wooden performances, and disjointed narrative. It failed to capture the essence of the popular video game series and was largely panned by both critics and audiences. “Alone in the Dark” stands as a notable example of a video game adaptation that struggled to translate its source material into a successful film.

Plot of the Movie

Paranormal investigator Edward Carnby has a nightmare about alien-like creatures from his childhood. He visits an urban museum where his girlfriend, Aline Cedric, works. Carnby carries a puzzle piece artifact from the Abkani tribe. He’s followed by a strange man with supernatural strength who eventually dies. Meanwhile, a ship retrieves a coffin from the ocean, but its crew is killed and the coffin is empty. The museum’s curator, Prof. Hudgens, finds an artifact from the coffin and escapes ashore.

Several people in the western US and Canada vanish after hearing a loud screech. Carnby faints while studying his artifact. Bureau 713 detects electromagnetic waves and investigates. Carnby connects the disappearances to the Abkani tribe. He visits the museum with Cedric, finding another Abkani artifact. A creature attacks, killing a guard. They hide until Bureau 713 troopers arrive. Carnby tries to share info with Commander Burke but is dismissed. He asks former colleagues about the creature.

Hudgens returns to the museum with a captured creature. He extracts fluid from it for his research on merging human and animal DNA. Carnby investigates his past at his old orphanage to uncover more about Hudgens’ experiments.

Creatures attack Bureau 713 soldiers in the museum, leading to casualties on both sides. Carnby arrives but is warned to stay away by Burke. During a scuffle, Carnby takes Burke’s security badge. He visits Bureau 713, where Fischer shows him creatures inside corpses. Fischer discovers Carnby has one too, but it’s dead due to Carnby’s childhood electroshock. Burke interrupts and escorts Carnby out. Later, Hudgens ambushes Fischer and implants a creature into him.

Carnby discovers the Abkani fought creatures vulnerable to light. Abkani artifacts worldwide open a gate to a creature-filled dimension. Hudgens experiments on himself, controlling monsters with their blood. Carnby, Cedric, Burke, and troops head to a mine with disruptions. They’re attacked, surviving to find the surgery room where creatures were implanted. Hudgens opens the gate using Carnby’s artifact. Millions of creatures emerge. Burke kills Hudgens and sacrifices himself to detonate a bomb. Carnby and Cedric surface to find the city deserted. As they walk, something approaches.
