Audiences love a movie with a strong script and a two-time Oscar-winning actor in a role that involves a character overcoming challenges, especially when it’s a heartwarming story.

This movie, BOATS (Based on a True Story), sets up the expectation of a heartwarming journey from the beginning. The title itself hints at the contrast and emotional ride we’re in for, promising smiles and tears along the way.

Hillary Swank plays Sharon, a hairdresser from Louisville, Kentucky who co-owns a thriving salon. She enjoys partying at night but struggles with alcohol. One day, she attends an AA meeting with a friend but leaves and buys alcohol instead. While at the store, she sees a newspaper headline about Michelle, a sick five-year-old who recently lost her mother. Sharon sees this as a chance to make a difference and introduces herself to Michelle’s family at the funeral.

Michelle and her sister Ashley are drawn to Sharon’s kindness and flashy style. Their father, Ed, is cautious and overwhelmed by their situation, reluctant to let Sharon get involved. Despite his reservations, Sharon persists, refusing to take no for an answer.

Sharon organizes a fundraiser at the salon and surprises Ed with a cash donation. Despite Ed’s initial reluctance, his mother invites Sharon for dinner. Ed worries about Sharon’s chaotic lifestyle, but his mother welcomes her. As Michelle’s health deteriorates and financial problems escalate, tensions rise.

The screenplay, written by Kelly Fremon Craig and Meg Tilly, tends to be overly sweet, especially in scenes with the charming young sisters. Alan Ritchson portrays a stoic character who struggles to express himself, while Hillary Swank handles her character’s complexities well. Sharon is impulsive yet capable. The film rushes through many crises and good deeds, diluting their emotional impact. The climax feels forced, adding yet another conflict on top of already dire circumstances, culminating in a Capra-esque moment of community unity and a long-awaited reconciliation.

The film shines in its quieter, emotionally authentic moments. One poignant scene involves Ed and Sharon confronting their mixed feelings about her involvement, including the link between her addictive behavior and her commitment to helping Michelle’s family. Swank’s honest portrayal suits Sharon’s determined character, offering inspiration for ordinary people to strive for more.
